Report: Tax burdens heavier in California
Californians bear the nation’s fourth highest individual income tax burden.
WalletHub issued its 2021 Tax Burden State report Wednesday and determined that California was tenth highest overall in combined tax burdens.
The personal finance website compared the 50 states based on the three components— property taxes, individual income taxes, and sales and excise taxes — as a share of total personal income.
The nation’s top three most-taxed states were New York, Hawaii and Vermont. At the bottom were Alaska, Tennessee and Wyoming.
When political leanings were figured in, conservative leaning red states have a lower tax burden than liberal blue states.
Tax Burden in California (1=Highest, 25=Avg.):
• 10th – Overall Tax Burden (9.48%)
• 32nd – Property Tax Burden (2.64%)
• 4th – Individual Income Tax Burden (3.78%)
• 34th – Total Sales & Excise Tax Burden (3.06%)
