Pandemic’s financial strains worry renters
SOUTHLAND – (INT) – As doctors try and put the pandemic behind us, the reality of personal financial issues is surfacing particularly the cost of housing.

Many have fallen behind on rent and others on their mortgage payments. It’s leading to an increase in the number of renters at-risk of eviction as the federal moratorium is set to expire on July 31st. And although California continues to have local eviction protections in place, many renters across the country will feel the effects of federal protections expiring.

With additional uncertainty about what will happen, Zillow estimates there will be about 481,630 eviction filings after the moratorium ends, with a projected 261,945 likely to be evicted.

In California:

• 1,034,410 renter households are currently behind on rent, 174,953 more than in June.

• It’s estimated there are 491,665 renter households currently at risk of eviction, 219,484 more than last month.

• Of those who are behind on rent, 27.9% believe they are very likely, 29.2% somewhat likely, 26.4% not very likely, and 15.7% not at all likely to be evicted.

California renters that are at-risk have additional time to work with landlords, whether through repayment plans or applying for federal aid for the most vulnerable renters.
