Motorist on trial in CHP officer’s death
MURRIETA – (INT) – A trial is opening in the 2nd degree murder case against a motorist accused of running down California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon.

Witnesses stated that Michael Joseph Callahan, 29, of Winchester was driving on the dirt shoulder of the I-15 near Lake Elsinore when his vehicle struck and killed Sgt. Licon.

Licon had pulled over a speeding car and was standing next to his motorcycle when he was struck.

Prosecutors charged Callahan with 2nd degree murder. His trial is being held in Riverside County Superior Court at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta.
