Aerial drug smugglers sentenced in border caper
Three suspects caught smuggling drugs using an ultralight airplane have received lengthy federal prison sentences.
Authorities rounded up the trio after their ultralight being tracked across the Mexican by Border Patrol and the Air and Marine Operations Center at March Air Reserve Base parachuted 116 pounds of methamphetamine into the desert at North Shore near the Salton Sea.
Two vehicles were intercepted by the California Highway Patrol and the Border Patrol at the time of the incident in December 2019.
Three of the suspects pleaded guilty and have been sentenced. A fourth, the primary suspect, jumped bail after being freed on bond.
