Purchasing managers fret over supply, price issues
INLAND EMPIRE – (INT) – Recovery from last year’s pandemic lockdown is impacting supply and demand issues reflected in the latest Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI).

While the region’s overall economy continues in the growth column, the Institute of Applied Research (IAR) at Cal State San Bernardino warns that continuing supply chain issues and rising commodity prices have signaled troublesome signs ahead.

Most purchasing managers are feeling the pressure of supply disruptions and labor strains that are causing them to feel less optimistic than they were just a month ago about the state of the economy during the rest of the year. Only 11% forecasted a strengthening local economy over the next 3 months.

Adding to the concern is a note of frustration when purchasing managers told IAR they are not receiving more applications for job openings now that the Federal Unemployment Benefit has ended. Only 10% of respondents reported receiving an increased level of applications for their job openings.

In summary, purchasing managers are expecting continuing supply chain issues and rising commodity prices.
