Sheriff shrugs off Oath Keepers affiliation
RIVERSIDE – (INT) – Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is drawing criticism over his reported claim that he once was a dues-paying member of the Oath Keepers Group which played a prominent role in the Capitol Hill insurrection.

Sheriff Bianco did not participate in the January siege and said he’d forgotten his brief affiliation with the Oath Keepers 7-years ago.

County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez said Wednesday he was “shocked and deeply troubled” at the revelation. Perez labeled the Oath Keepers as a “far right, anti-government militia based on extremist racist views.”

“Our communities want government and law enforcement to protect our residents, and to govern and police our communities without extremist views,” Perez said.

Bianco raised eyebrows last month when he refused to require sheriff’s department employees to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The sheriff, who also acts as Riverside County coroner, is up for reelection next year.
