San Bernardino mayor censured, removal from regional boards considered
SAN BERNARDINO – (INT) – The San Bernardino City Council voted Wednesday evening to censure Mayor John Valdivia and consider removing him from regional governing boards.

There were four allegations and 42 violations alleging that he applied for city funds as reimbursement for meal expenses and hotel accommodations that were comingled with campaign and fundraising events.

Fred Shorett, the senior member of the City Council, led the argument in favor of censure. Attorney Rod Pacheco, Valdivia’s legal counsel and former Riverside County District Attorney, argued against censure.

The council voted unanimously to consider at a later time eliminating Valdivia’s membership on regional boards and commissions.

The mayor’s censure was the first of its kind in San Bernardino in 20-years. Valdivia is the city’s highest elected official. He is up for re-election in 2022.
