Officer-involved killing comes under wider scrutiny
HEMET – (INT) - California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Tuesday that the California Department of Justice will independently review an officer-involved shooting in Hemet that claimed the life of an individual allegedly linked to the distribution of Fentanyl.

Bonta did not explain the DOJ’s involvement but said results of the independent probe will be turned over to a special prosecutions unit.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the individual had been under surveillance and when confronted fled through the parking lot of a business on Florida Avenue carrying a firearm.

Less-than-lethal devices used by the officers failed to subdue the man resulting in gunfire. The individual who died at the scene has not been publicly identified.

Details of the individual’s involvement with Fentanyl were not released and the role the business played in the distribution of the potent drug was not explained.

Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin has vowed a concerted effort with other law enforcement agencies to file murder charges against those selling Fentanyl when a death occurs.
