Riding the rails becoming safer in earthquake country
RIVERSIDE – (INT) - Metrolink is using new technology for an Earthquake Early Warning System.

It will be tested along the 91/Perris Valley Line between Riverside and Perris in partnership with Caltrans and the US Geological Survey.

It employs the earthquake early warning system known as ShakeAlert. It provides data within seconds of an earthquake being detected, including the earthquake’s origin, time, location, and magnitude. An alert goes out seconds before the shaking begins bringing a train to a safe stop.

It would be added to Metrolink’s existing Positive Train Control (PTC) system that automatically applies the brakes for rapid slowing or stopping of trains. PTC was originally designed to prevent train collisions and high speed derailments.
