Off-duty Riverside motorcycle officer killed at Nuevo
NUEVO – (INT) - Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez disclosed Tuesday that it was one of his officers who was killed in a Monday evening motorcycle accident in Nuevo, near Perris.

Sergeant Matt Lewis was off-duty on his motorcycle when he became trapped under a trailer, according to the California Highway Patrol’s initial response.

The incident was reported at 7:15 Monday evening at Pico and Santa Rosa avenues.

Chief Gonzalez wrote in a Tuesday tweet that Sergeant Lewis was a 25-year veteran of the RPD. “He excelled as a Cadet, Police Officer, Detective and Sergeant working a variety of assignments.”

Chief Gonzalez said “Matt was well-liked and admired, not only by those he worked alongside at our department, but throughout the law enforcement community.”

Among his survivors are four children and one grandchild.
