Can California make the digital world safe for children? SACRAMENTO – (INT) –Social media and other platforms will be required to take steps to protect children’s mental and physical health and wellbeing while online.
Governor Newsom has signed the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act. It’s the first in the nation prohibiting companies that provide online services, products or features likely to be accessed by children from using a child’s personal information against their wellbeing. Specifically, the platforms cannot collect, sell or retain a child’s geolocation. And, they are forbidden from profiling a child by default and lead nor encourage children to provide personal information. Newsom welcomed the bi-partisan bill protecting children’s online data and privacy. Story Date: October 3, 2022
