Mt. Baldy’s beauty belies its danger
MOUNT BALDY – (INT) - A 71-year-old man is the latest hiker to be rescued from the treacherous, icy slopes of Mt. Baldy.

Abdollah Katbab of Del Mar was trying to negotiate a trail between Timber Mountain and Ice House Saddle on Saturday January 28th. He managed to stop his slide and called for help on his Garmin In Reach device. Katbab was hoisted aboard a sheriff’s rescue helicopter.

Although Katbab was lucky, authorities are sounding the alarm about Mt. Baldy’s growing hiker mortality rate.

From 2017-2022, search and rescue teams conducted 233 missions on Mt. Baldy, with eight fatalities. Within that time frame, volunteers have searched 27,277 hours on and around the 10-thousand foot high peak.
