'Smart’ technology coming to congested I-15
TEMECULA – (INT) – The next generation of freeway ramp meters will make their debut on Interstate 15 in the Temecula-Murrieta area.

A proposed 2-year pilot project will combine sensors and ‘smart’ technology to continuously monitor traffic conditions along an 8-mile segment of the I-15.

The coordinated system will adapt to allow more or fewer vehicles to enter the freeway at any given time from the Temecula Parkway-Rancho California Road and Winchester Road on-ramps. Planners believe the pilot project will improve overall traffic flow by maintaining steady travel speeds.
That section of the I-15 has been plagued by a high volume of vehicles entering the freeway simultaneously, especially during peak afternoon and evening hours.

The innovative project is in partnership with the Riverside County Transportation Commission, Caltrans and the City of Temecula.

Construction is anticipated to start this summer with pilot testing following in 2025.
