Pressure grows to stop the transfer of ‘death row’ inmates
CHINO – (INT) – Chino City officials are stepping up pressure on the State Department of Corrections not to transfer 33 ‘death row’ inmates to the California Institute for Men (CIM).

Officials argue that the prison that is in dire need of upgrades to keep violent criminals housed.

Mayor Eunice Ulloa says “These transfers have opened old wounds and forced us to relive memories of Kevin Cooper, who escaped from CIM and brutally murdered members of a local family approximately 40 years ago. I call on CDCR and the State of California to remove these condemned inmates from our community and fix this prison,” she said.

Voter-approved Proposition 66 mandated that death row prisoners pay restitution to victims’ families. CDCR and Governor Gavin Newsom have begun to implement the Condemned Inmate Transfer Program. It allows the transfer of death row inmates out of San Quentin State Prison and into lower-level prisons equipped with an electrified fence, such as CIM
