Where are many IE immigrants coming from?
SOUTHLAND – (INT) – New data reinforces what has been known that the Inland Empire is magnet for many leaving Los Angeles.

Migration within California has consisted mostly of movement away from Los Angeles and the Bay Area. The most popular destination for Angelenos has been the Inland Empire, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

The pattern existed before the pandemic, but accelerated in the latest Census data from 2021 and 2022.

Remote work is likely a significant driver of recent migration trends. Since the pandemic, remote workers account for a majority of the increase in those leaving LA. Reasoning by IPUMS is consistent with the kind of jobs amenable to remote work, which tend to pay higher wages.

Data for this story was provided by IPUMS which collects and analyzes census and survey data. It is funded with federal grants and contracts.
