San Bernardino poised to clean-up homeless encampments SAN BERNARDINO – (INT) – San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran says the clean-up of homeless encampments in her city “is not something that will be completed in a day, in a week, or even a month.” But, it will begin in a couple of weeks.
Her comments follow a decision by a federal judge dismissing a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union and lifted an injunction prohibiting the City from conducting homeless encampment cleanups. An agreement updates City policies on how cleanups are conducted. Under the cleanup policy: • A designated a disabilities coordinator will oversee requests by disabled individuals for reasonable accommodations before and during an encampment cleanup. • The City will train all employees and contractors participating in a cleanup in the city’s policy and procedures. • A ‘flyer’ will inform and educate homeless individuals about the encampment cleanup policy. A statement from the City says it has committed nearly $60 million in local, state, federal, and grant funding to address homelessness, including the construction of two full service, comprehensive homeless housing facilities, the creation of a homeless outreach team, and funds for hotel vouchers to be issued to augment local shelters while the new facilities are being built.
