Survey: Is it time to disband the Electoral College? ![]() INLAND EMPIRE – (INT) – In statewide survey, the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) found Californians would support abolishing the Electoral College.
Support is highest among Inland Empire residents (76%). They would support election of the president by direct popular vote instead of by the Electoral College, according to the September PPIC Statewide Survey. Women are slightly more likely than men to support this, and the share in support rises as education level increases. However, there is a notable partisan divide on this issue. Over eight in ten Democrats and two in three independents would support presidential elections conducted by direct popular vote, while Republicans are evenly divided. In brief liberal California Democrats are the most likely—and conservative Republicans the least likely—to support a popular vote system. For over 200 years, the United States has used the Electoral College to determine the outcome of the presidential vote Story Date: November 11, 2024
