Where California ranks for drivers ![]() On a transportation note, California has the distinction of being the sixth worst state for drivers.
WalletHub took into consideration 31 key indicators for a positive commute. They range from average gas prices to rush-hour traffic congestion to road quality. States that ranked worse than California were Colorado, New Hampshire, Montana, Washington and Hawaii. Conversely, the best states for drivers were relatively rural, with smaller populations, a low cost of living, well-maintained roads and safe motorists. The top three were Kansas, Idaho and Indiana.
