Salton Sea being given a new lease on life
SALTON CITY – (INT) – There has been a potential achievement in the restoration of the Salton Sea.

An expansion pond has been filled becoming the first in a network of ponds, berms, nesting and loafing islands, and water delivery systems designed to sustain fish and bird populations.

The Species Conservation Habitat Project would restore approximately 14 square miles of vital habitat when fully built out. The total project footprint is now envisioned to span over 9,000 acres.

The Salton Sea, California’s largest lake, has shrunk in recent years due to reduced inflows, resulting in an exposed lakebed. Small dust particles are further impacting the already-poor air quality in the Imperial Valley and the southern Coachella Valley.
