Californians decisive about redistricting
SACRAMENTO – (INT) - Californians struck back Tuesday against President Donald Trump’s push to keep the House of Representatives in the hands of Republicans, by favoring a ballot proposition that would redraw the state’s congressional maps.
Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democratic state lawmakers pitched the measure in response to mid-decade redistricting in Texas, where Republicans voted to change their congressional map earlier this year to shift up to five seats to their party after pressure from Trump. Returns showed more than 64% of early ballots were in favor of Proposition 50, according to results reported by the Secretary of State’s Office. Newsom called it an “extraordinary result” during a speech at the California Democratic Party headquarters in Sacramento. In Riverside County, 56% were favoring Proposition 50 and in San Bernardino County 57% of those who cast ballots said yes. Final tabulation of the ballots cast was continuing.
