Airlines and passengers cope with flight cancellations
ONTARIO – (INT) – Flight cancellations and delays are mounting up amid the FAA-ordered reduction in air traffic.
The impact at Ontario International Airport (ONT) has been minimal, so far, but is likely to become more acute as the government shutdown hits air traffic controllers. FlightAware reported seventeen cancellations Sunday (November 9th) and thirty-six delayed flights at ONT. Ontario has a high number of cargo flights. Southwest Airlines announced flight schedule reductions through Tuesday, November 11, and impact 34 out of the 117 airports Southwest serves, according an update Sunday. Southwest removed roughly 140 flights from Monday’s schedule, with about 115 flights canceled Tuesday, the update said. Large numbers of flights have been canceled at major airports across California as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reduces air traffic in a bid to relieve pressure on air traffic controllers who are working without pay during the ongoing government shutdown. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the reduction in flights is about safety. Story Date: November 18, 2025
