Dare to compare how California rates in credit scores
California is neither here nor there in the state-by-state ranking of personal credit scores.
WalletHub’s report ranked Californians 25th with an average personal score of 704. Credit scores illustrate how people in different parts of the country are financially holding up. States with the highest credit scores are Minnesota (723), New Hampshire (721) and Vermont (720). They are among the states that have high average incomes, low unemployment rates and other positive economic factors that make it easier for residents to pay their creditors on time and limit their borrowing. At the bottom end are Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi where the average credit card score comes in at 669. Factors in the credit card rankings are rising household debt fueled by inflation and record-high interest rates. (INT) Story Date: January 29, 2026
