Winter snowpack takes a hit becoming far below average
SACRAMENTO – (INT) - An update of the Sierra snowpack demonstrates the fickleness of California’s winter weather.
A series of atmospheric rivers in December boosted the snowpack to 89 percent of average. But, a dry January, which is historically the wettest month of the year in California, has now eroded the gains to an average of 59 Percent. The State Department of Water Resources says the amount of water contained in the snowpack has also fallen. It’s that water which is a key resource for the state throughout the summer. Forecasts currently show no major precipitation in the next two weeks. Story Date: February 9, 2026
