Will fire insurance companies write more policies?
LOS ANGELES – (INT) – A new analysis reveals that rebuilding the neighborhoods destroyed by the Palisades and Eaton fires could reduce projected wildfire losses by one-third on average.
The study is the first to model how community-wide adoption of science-based building and landscaping standards affects a metric insurance companies rely on when deciding whether to write policies in a given area. The analysis comes from the California Department of Insurance and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Their report states that science can be brought to bear to re-set wildfire risk at scale and grow insurance options statewide. The finding carries implications not only for Los Angeles but for every wildfire-threatened community in California, the NAIC said. Story Date: April 8, 2026
