MWD warns of potential water supply reductions
SACRAMENTO - (INT) - The Department of Water Resources (DWR) today conducted the critical April Sierra snow survey and found no measurable snow.
It’s a stark indicator of how record hot March temperatures and high elevation rain have erased the Sierra Nevada snowpack months ahead of schedule. The combination of warm storms and unusually hot temperatures rapidly melted what remained of this year’s already sparse snowpack. Statewide, the snowpack is now just 18 percent of average for this date, according to the automated snow sensor network. It is the second lowest April measurement on record. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) says the snowpack has also reached record low levels in Southern California’s other source of imported water, the Colorado River Basin. The MWD warns to be prepared for potential near-term reductions in that water supply. Story Date: April 2, 2026
