BIG BEAR – (INT) – Big Bear’s famed bald eagles Jackie and Shadow have reason to be proud. Their latest hatchlings have been named.

Third graders at Big Bear Valley Elementary School selected ‘Sandy’ and ‘Luna’ from among 64-thousand names submitted in a contest. According the Friends of Big Bear Valley, Sandy was named in memory of the former executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley. Luna is Latin is for “moon” in Roman mythology.

Their parents first got together in 2018 and successfully raised chicks in 2019 and 2022. However, their eggs failed to hatch in 2023 and 2024. But, two eaglets were born in 2025. Only 50 percent of eagle eggs successfully hatch, so this pair has already beaten the odds.
