SAN BERNARDINO - Mosquitoes collected in the city of San Bernardino have tested positive for West Nile virus.

This is the first collection of mosquitoes that have tested positive in 2026 within the area served by the Environmental Health Services Mosquito and Vector Control Program (MVCP).

MVCP is taking steps to eliminate mosquito breeding hazards.

People bitten by an infected mosquito may develop West Nile fever and experience flu-like symptoms, which may include fever, body aches, skin rash and fatigue.

In some people, West Nile fever can develop into a more serious form of the disease such as brain damage, permanent muscle weakness and even death. If you have been bitten by a mosquito and are experiencing these symptoms, contact your medical care provider.

“West Nile virus can cause serious illness in humans, so I encourage residents to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites,” said San Bernardino County Health Officer Dr. Sharon Wang, D.O. “Community awareness and consistent prevention efforts play an important role in reducing mosquito populations and lowering the risk of West Nile virus.” (Source: San Bernardino County)
