SOUTHLAND – (INT) – Southern California Edison customers who have been blasting their air conditioning during this period of intense summer heat are going to get some relief on their bill.

Customers are getting a total credit of $72 automatically in two parts — half in August and half in September, the utility announced.

Funding for the climate credit comes from revenues generated through California’s Cap-and-Invest program, which requires large facilities that emit greenhouse gases to buy carbon pollution allowances.

That money is then used to give back to utility customers.

The State Public Utilities Commission moved the credit distribution to summer when electricity bills are highest because of air conditioning needs.

“We know families and businesses are facing higher costs for everyday essentials,” SCE President and CEO Steve Powell said in a statement. “The climate credit provides direct savings on summer bills and, together with lower electricity rates this year, helps make energy more affordable for customers.”
