Inland Empire city rolls out the ‘Grappler’ to stop fleeing drivers
CORONA - A police department has become the first municipal agency in California to implement the Grappler, a bumper-mounted device used to safely end or prevent high-speed chases.
The Corona Police Department said it is joining some countywide agencies in using the pursuit-stopping device, which has become the subject of several viral videos on YouTube. “The bumper-mounted device deploys a netting system onto the tire of a fleeing vehicle, preventing or stopping high-speed pursuits,” police said. The department’s new vehicle has already made an impact. On Aug. 28, the Grappler was deployed on a vehicle driven by a suspect accused of assault with a deadly weapon who was believed to be armed with a gun. “When the pursuit entered our jurisdiction, CPD officers joined to assist, deployed The Grappler, and brought the pursuit to a safe and immediate end,” police said. “We are always striving to find better and more innovative ways to safeguard our community while ensuring criminals are held accountable!” Law enforcement agencies across the country have increasingly adopted the Grappler pursuit-ending device in recent years, citing its ability to stop fleeing vehicles with far less risk than PIT maneuvers or spike strips.
