Fires Saturday (May 25th) in Perris and Banning are a sure sign that the wildfire season is here. CalFire said each blackened about 35 acres. Their causes are under investigation. (INT) Witnesses have helped investigators identify a Riverside youth suspected in the gunshot death of a 15-year-old boy. Javier Carrillo, 18, was located in Chino and arrested on suspicion of murder. The victim was fatally shot May 19th in Jurupa Valley. Authorities did not publicly identifythe victim or offer any details. (INT) A Riverside woman has drawn a 32-month prison term for terrorizing a Jewish family with anti-Semitic threats. A federal judge sentenced Melanie Harris, 59, on Thursday (May 23rd). Harris earlier pleaded guilty to making anti-Semitic phone threats to the former executive director of the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (INT) A 30-year-old Redlands woman is recovering from police-inflicted wounds that capped a domestic disturbance Thursday night (May 23rd). Police had responded to a Redlands residence when they were confronted by the knife-wielding woman. She was shot and wounded refusing to disarm herself. (INT) In a sure sign of the approaching summer wildfire season, starting Saturday, June 1st, open burning will be prohibited, and certain hazardous hiking areas in Riverside County will be closed. Fortino Morales III has the responsibility for making sure the Inland Empire’s largest city is at the forefront on clean energy, water quality and recharge, usage and waste reduction, local food system vitality, air quality and climate resiliency, and greening facilities, fleet and systems. Morales will be on board June 7th. (INT) The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the city of San Bernardino unveiled Dodgers Dreamfields 61, 62 and 63 at Blair Park on Saturday, May 18th. The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation is closer to its goal of 75 fields by 2033 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Dodgers’ move to Los Angeles. (INT) A variety of service changes are in place for Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) busses. The RTA has adjusted several routes to increase frequency, enhance connections, provide access to more destinations and improve on-time performance. The changes were effective on May 12th. The RTA has posted thirty-two straight months of increasing ridership. (INT) Assemblymember Eloise Gomez Reyes of San Bernardino is spearheading a slate of bills focused on bolstering climate resilience in California’s iconic state parks and expanding equitable outdoor access for all. The package would combat climate change and help to conserve 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters by 2030. (INT) Two thieves have been sidelined on suspicion of stealing mail from at least 16 victims across the Inland Empire and Los Angeles County. A search of their vehicle turned up stolen checks and credit cards and burglary tools. Investigators are working with the United Postal Inspection Service to identify additional victims. (INT) When Pacific High School in San Bernardino graduates 270 students, nearly half are already looking forward. They have completed a Career-Technical Education (CTE) Pathway and 34 percent have completed at least one college course while in high school. The grads will pickup their diplomas in a May 30th graduation ceremony at the San Bernardino Valley College Football Stadium. (INT) Hikers and bicyclists can look forward to a new recreation path. The Savaine Trail will extend along the East Etiwanda Creek Channel from the Fontana Pacific Electric Trail into Rancho Cucamonga's Banyan Street. Construction will be ongoing until next spring. (INT) The California High-Speed Rail Authority Friday (May 24th) released the final environmental document for the more than 30-mile segment between Palmdale and Burbank in Southern California. It is the last key environmental document needed to connect San Francisco to downtown Los Angeles. (INT) Bobby Clemmer has been sworn-in as the new chief of the Victorville Fire Department. Clemmer, who promoted from Deputy Chief of Operations for Victorville Fire, has spent his entire career serving the High Desert. (INT) The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is reaching out for help in finding a motorist who led deputies in a bullet-punctuated chase through Jurupa Valley. Martin Perez, Jr., 30, eluded deputies for a traffic violation. He abandoned his vehicle in the dense undergrowth of the Santa Ana Riverbottom and disappeared. Perez has not been seen since May 14th. Investigators say he may be in San Bernardino. (INT) Fire restrictions are being ramped up in the deserts of Riverside, San Bernardino and parts of seven other counties. Among the limitations is recreational target shooting which is prohibited. There are also restrictions on campfires, controlled flame devices, target shooting and smoking. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has found that 95 percent of desert wildfires are human-caused. The BLM is imposing the restrictions effective May 22nd. (INT) Reconstructing the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge over the BNSF railyards in San Bernardino is shifting to the superstructure stage. Pre-cast wall sections for the approach are being put in place. Erecting girders for the Third Street superstructure will require a 2-day closure of Third Street beginning May 28th. (INT) Assessed property values across California have soared to 8-point-3 trillion dollars or more than 6 percent over the past year. The State Board of Equalization reports that resulting property tax revenue generated 89-billion dollars distributed among schools, counties, cities and special districts. (INT) |
